Cemaleddin Afgani, 19. Yüzyılda, İslam dünyanın modernlikle birlikte değişen şartlarına uyum sağlayabilmesi için, dinin yeniden yorumlanarak inşa edilmesi fikrini savunan ve bunun için mücadele veren, yerleşik inançlar karşısında bir çok zorlukla karşılaşan reformist ve devrimci bir düşünürdür. O İslam'ın mesajı ve temel hükümleri ile günün koşullarının uzlaştırılabileceğini her zaman savunmuştur. Afgani'nin görüşüne göre dinin modernleşmesinin ve reformun amacı Müslüman toplumlarda yerleşik olan dini düşünce ve inançlardaki hurafeleri ayıklamak, dinin asli (otantik) mesajına uygun canlanmayı sağlayabilmektir. O, Müslümanların hem düşüncelerinde hem de hayat düzenlerinde bir kıyam meydana getirmek istemiştir. Afgani'nin tüm konferans, konuşma ve yazılarının odak noktasını Müslümanları ataletten kurtarmak, sömürüye karşı eyleme geçmelerini teşvik etmek, inançlarını saran hurafelerden kurtulmalarını sağlamak ve İslam düşüncesinin akli boyutunu daima ön planda tutmak oluşturur. Cemaleddin Afgani, Batı'nın sömürgeci politikalarına karşı İslam milletlerini, asrın gerçeği olarak gördüğü milliyetçilik duygusunu ateşleyerek ayaklandırmak istemiştir. Bunun İslam birliğine zarar vermeyeceğini de düşünmüştür. Onun düşüncesine göre eğer İslam toplumundaki kuvvetli olan unsurlar tek tek bir araya getirilebilirse daha kuvvetli bir topluluk oluşabilir ve milli şuurun kazanılması da mümkün olabilir. Bu çalışmada Afgani'nin din ve toplum anlayışı, İslam milletlerinin ilerlemesi için ileri sürdüğü görüşleri, politika üretmenin onun nezdindeki ulusal ve sosyal önemi ile Müslümanların sömürgeciliğe karşı durabilmeleri için neler yapmaları gerektiği hususundaki fikirleri ve bu uğurda yaptığı mücadeleler incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca onun İslam birliği ideali, ideal bir toplum oluşturmak ve insanları mutluluğa ulaştırmak için önerdiği yöntemler de inceleme konularımız arasında yer almıştır. Cemaleddin Afghani is a reformist and revolutionary thinker who in the 19th century, defended and struggled for the reinterpretation of religion in order to adapt to the changing conditions of the Islamic world with modernity. He has always argued that the message and basic provisions of Islam can be reconciled with the conditions of the day. In Afghan view, the aim of modernization and reform of religion is to remove the superstitions of religious thoughts and beliefs established in Muslim societies and to ensure the revival of the original message of religion. He wanted to create a splinter in both the thoughts and order of life of the Muslims. The focus of all Afghani's conferences, speeches and writings is to free Muslims from inertia, to encourage them to take action against exploitation, to get rid of the superstitions that surround their beliefs, and to always keep the mental dimension of Islamic thought in the forefront. Cemaleddin Afghani wanted to revolt the Islamic nations against the colonialist policies of the West by firing the sense of nationalism which he saw as the truth of the century. He also thought that this would not harm the Islamic unity. In his opinion, if the strong elements of Islamic society can be brought together individually, a stronger community can be formed and national consciousness can be gained. In this study, Afghan's understanding of religion and society, the views put forward for the advancement of Islamic nations, the national and social importance of policy making before him and the ideas that Muslims should do in order to stand against colonialism and their struggles for this purpose are examined. In addition, his ideal of Islamic unity, the methods he proposed to create a society and bring people to happiness were also among our subjects of study.
