Fumigant toxicities of Mentha spicata, Mentha villoso-nervata ,Mentha piperita clones and the main component of these essential oils against granary weevil [(Sitophilus granarius L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)] were tested. Mentha villoso-nervata essential oil appeared to be the most toxic among the tested oils with 90% mortality. Carvone was the only toxic component of the essential oils and caused 100% mortality in 24 hours. Dose-response bioassay with the most promising Mentha villoso-nervata, Mentha spicata and carvone exhibited that carvone was the most active with LC50 value of 0.024 mu l/ml. This study showed that M. villoso-nervata and carvone had potential in control of granary weevil. |
