dc.description Waste management is common problem for many countries in world and landfill site selection is a necessary issue for waste management in fast-growing regions. Likewise, appropriate landfill site selection should be performed for each municipality in Turkey because municipal solid wastes are major problem for especially drinking water basins. The main objective of this study is to selection of a landfill site in the Yalvac Basin. The basin is located at east of the Egirdir Lake which is the second largest fresh water lake of the Turkey. Furthermore, it has great importance for the region since it supplies drinking water to Isparta city. Therefore, the appropriate landfill site selection is necessary for region. In this study, landfill sites are selected not only according to environmental factors but also economic factors evaluated by using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Many potential criteria, such as slope, distance from roads, landuse, aquifer type, visibility from settlements, distance from surface waters, distance from settlements, erosion and elevation were considered. Each criterion is evaluated with the aid of AHP and mapped by GIS. The final suitability map was created by overlay analyses in GIS environment and high and low suitable areas were determined. According to field investigations, suitable areas generally have suitable properties for landfill siting. However, detailed feasibility study should be carried out on the final selected area.
