Comparative Economic Analysis of Organic and Conventional Rose Oil (Rosa damascenae Mill.) Cultivation in Lakes Region, Turkey

dc.description This study makes a comparative economic analysis of organic and conventional oil bearing rose cultivation in the Goller (Lakes) Region of Turkey. The study uses data obtained from face to face interviews with farms producing organic and conventionally cultivated oil bearing rose in the Lakes Region. Examined farms used 1493.4 h/ha labor in conventional production and 1097 h/ha labor in organic production in production period. Harvest period received 68.21 % of the total labor of conventional production and 57.05 % of the total labor of organic production. The yield of rose flower of farms was approximately 4166.3 kg/ha in conventional production, and 1869.4 kg/ha in organic production. The yield rose flower was determined to be more than 55 % in conventional production than organic production, but the purchase price of rose flowers was 50 % higher in organic production than conventional production. It was found that the production cost of rose flowers was 1.89 TL/kg (1 USD = 1.51 TL) in conventional production and 3.08 TL/kg in organic production. Total gross production value was 8266.8 TL/ha in conventional production and 5677.4 TL/ha in organic production. Approximate net profit was 405.6 TL/ha in conventional production and -81.6 TL/ha in organic production. Relative return was 1.05 in conventional production and 0.99 in organic production. The results of the study suggest that conventional production is relatively more profitable than organic production; however, the difference between them is not significant. In the evaluations, increased support for organic production will also make it more profitable.
