By means of an increase in the number of researchers referring to Ottoman written documents, Ottoman houses have been re-evaluated with a critical approach. In this re-evaluation process, these documents reveal a variety of houses which cannot be generalized on the contrary to the past typological works. Based on this point of view, this paper aims to make a contribution to this area by focusing on five examples of houses represented in istibdal records in Ahkam registers between 1742 and 1765. In this way, each house-with its users, neighbours, dimensions and space components-will be handled as a whole and examined individually. The examples were selected among a type of similar houses, all of them in two sections, one called a dahiliye and the other a hariciye. On the other hand, when comparing these houses among each other, it is seen that each of them has a particular situation, different characteristics and components, and also diversified spatial relationships. This variety among the houses is very important, so that the ultimate goal of this paper is to point out this diversification. It is also necessary to remark that each house has its particular story and history. That is because, for beginning to think about and discuss these houses, differences, diversities and exceptional cases also contribute a lot to the literature, in addition to the general characteristics and similarities. |
