dc.description Today consumers do not only pay attention to the price of the product but also some other criteria; such as quality, nutritional value, calorie content, manufacturing type and place of production while purchasing. In addition to developments in the socio-economic structure of the consumer, transformation of consumer behaviour is also a result of the fear caused by the foodborne-epidemics and the following awareness, and caused increased attention of the consumers, researchers and the related authorities to the food related issues and "food safety" in Europe at the beginning of 1990s. Furthermore, the necessity of differentiation of the products in the market has transformed the literature to include food safety and the importance of "food quality". In line with the concept of food quality, the importance of the protection of traditional and local foods has increased. The purpose of the study was to discuss the EU food policies in the context of the chapter of "Food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy" opened to negations for Turkey June 30th, 2010 following the intergovernmental conference organised in the council of the EU during the accession negotiation process, and within this context the importance of geographical indications.
