Despite improvements in the sphere of education, the disadvantageous status of women's access to education services still persists. Gender-based inequality is among the leading inequalities in the field of education in Turkey. Inequalities in education, along with traditional gender patterns, play a determining role in women's participation in social life and paid labor. Inequalities in education also pose problems for women in respect of being active, informed and responsible citizens. Today, women constitute the majority of seven million people, who do not have access to education or who are illiterate. Educational campaigns, which have been in implementation since the early 1990s in many countries, were launched at the end of 1990s in Turkey. Yet, after the 2001 economic crisis, there was a rapid increase in the number of such campaigns in the country. The target audience of these campaigns, such as support for national education and conditional cash transfers, were women, children, chiefly female children, who are most adversely influenced by poverty. The main objectives of these programs were to increase the literacy of women, to improve living conditions for women and children, to help women gain productive skills and become self-sufficient in their daily living. |
