dc.description This paper discusses the applicability of biological phosphorus removal in two-stage biological treatment and deals with the successful attempt to achieve biological phosphorus removal in an existing municipal wastewater treatment plant, which was composed of high-loaded activated sludge and submerged biofilter. The modification included the utilization of biofilter backwash water to achieve biological phosphorus removal, instead of directing it to a separate sedimentation basin. Following an operational period of the modified situation, the obtained results on P-removal together with the other consequences, such as improvements on sludge bulking control, settling properties and facilitated sludge processing, were evaluated.
