dc.description In this study, the possibility of utilisation of forest pastures for sustainable animal production purposes in the west Mediterranean part of Turkey with special reference to Isparta province was examined. Due to climate conditions, topography and the limited natural resources of Isparta province located in the west Mediterranean part of Turkey, animal husbandry has not developed well enough, resulting in very few number of the farmers engaged in animal production. The number of cattle in the province accounts for only 1% of total number of cattle in Turkey (11 million). While the grassland area accounts for 9%, the forest land accounts for 40% of whole area of Isparta. To develop and improve animal husbandry in Isparta, there is a need to create and use new resources such as forest pastures as they occupy a large amount of land in the region. Therefore, the possibility of using forest pastures and their contributions for sustainable animal production are discussed.
