Gösterdiği siyasi ve askeri başarıları onun sırasıyla Basra'ya daha sonra Bağdat'a yönetici olmasını sağlamıştır. 1127 yılında Irak Selçuklu Sultanı Mahmud tarafından Musul'a vali olarak tayin edilmiştir. Aynı zamanda Sultan, İmâdeddîn'e iki çocuğunu da yetiştirmesi için vererek onun Atabey unvanı almasını sağlamıştır. Musul Valisi olan Atabey İmâdeddîn Zengî, göreve geldiğinde ilk olarak bölgedeki emirlikleri kendisine tâbi hale getirmeye çalışmıştır. Kısa sürede Suriye ve Kuzey Irak'daki şehirleri içine alan El-Cezire ve Mezopotamya bölgesinin çoğu yerini hâkimiyeti altına almıştır. Asıl amacı Müslüman emirlikleri tek çatı altında toplayıp Haçlılara karşı savaşmaktı. Siyasi hayatının çoğunu Haçlılarla mücadele içinde geçiren İmâdeddîn Zengî, önemli başarılara imza atmıştır. Bölgede bulunan Haçlı kontluklarına çokça hasar vermiştir. Onun en önemli başarılarından biri kuşkusuz Urfa Haçlı Kontluğunu fethetmesidir. Siyasi mücadeleleri yanında yönetimi altındaki Musul ve çevresindeki şehirlerde birçok mimari eser inşa ettirmiş ve tarım, hayvancılık, ticaret gibi alanlardaki faaliyetleri sebebiyle ekonomik yönden ülkesinin kalkınmasını sağlamıştır. O, idâri ve askeri kişiliğiyle gerçekleştirdiği birçok alandaki faaliyetlerle kendisinden sonraki yöneticilere örnek olmuştur. Hazırlanan bu çalışma giriş ve dört ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde XII. yüzyıl Orta Doğu coğrafyasında varlık gösteren bazı devletler ve emirlikler hakkında bilgi verilmiş, İmâdeddîn Zengî'nin nesebi ve Musul valiliği dönemine kadar hayatı üzerinde durulmuştur. İkinci bölümde Musul valiliği döneminde Büyük Selçuklu Devleti, Abbâsî Halifeliği, civardaki Müslüman Emirlikler, Bizans İmparatorluğu ve Haçlılarla ilişkileri ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde vefatı ve kişiliğinden, son bölümde ise dönemindeki sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik alanlardan bahsedilmiştir. Çalışmada genel olarak XI. yüzyıl sonları ve XII. yüzyıl ortalarına kadar İmâdeddîn Zengî zamanı araştırılmış, özellikle onun hayatı ve iktidarlığı dönemindeki siyasi, sosyo-kültürel faaliyetleri incelenmiştir. Imadeddin Zengi, the son of Kasımuddevle Aksungur, one of the famous commanders of the Great Seljuk State and also the governor of Aleppo, lost his father at a young age and was taken under the protection of his father's close friends and brought up in Mosul. Zengi always served the governors of Mosul who trained him and took important duties in state affairs. His courage, heroism and use of weapons in the wars he participated in his youth were spoken by everyone, friend or foe. He gained his first management experience in the city of Vasıt. His political and military successes enabled him to be the ruler of Basra and then Baghdad, respectively. In 1127, he was appointed as the governor of Mosul by the Iraqi Seljuk Sultan Mahmud. At the same time, the Sultan gave Imadeddin the title of Atabey by giving him to raise his two children. Atabey Imadeddin Zengi, who was the Governor of Mosul, first tried to make the emirates in the region subject to him when he took office. In a short time, he brought under his rule most of the Mesopotamia and Al-Jazeera region which includes the cities in Northern Iraq and Syria. His main aim was to gather the Muslim emirates under one roof and fight against the Crusaders. Imadeddin Zengi, who spent most of his political life fighting the Crusaders, achieved important successes. He caused a lot of damage to the Crusader counties in the region. One of his most important achievements was undoubtedly the conquest of the Crusader Earl of Urfa. In addition to his political struggles, he had many architectural works built in Mosul and the surrounding cities under his rule, and he provided the economic development of his country due to his activities in fields such as agriculture, animal husbandry and trade. With his administrative and military personality, he set an example for the future rulers with his activities in many fields. This study consists of an introduction and four main chapters. In the introduction, information is given about some states and emirates that existed in the Middle Eastern geography of the 12th century. In the first chapter, the lineage of Imadeddin Zengi and his life until the period of Mosul governorship are examined. In the second chapter, his relations with the Great Seljuk State, the Abbasid Caliphate, the neighbouring Muslim Emirates, the Byzantine Empire and the Crusaders were discussed during the Mosul governorship. In the third chapter, his death and personality, is mentioned while in the last chapter the social and cultural life of his period is touched. In general, in the study, the time of Imadeddin Zengi from the late period of 11th century until the middle of 12th century was researched, especially his life and his political, socio-cultural activities during his reign were examined.
