Median mandibular fleksiyon (MMF), ağzın açılma ve protrüzyon hareketleri sırasında kontrakte olan lateral pterygoid kasların neden olduğu, mandibula şeklindeki değişiklik olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, tam dişli ve tam dişsiz bireylerde mandibulanın maksimum açıklığında meydana gelen fleksiyon miktarının ölçülmesi ve değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı. Çalışmamıza 56'sı tam dişli ve 35'i tam dişsiz toplam 91 gönüllü birey katıldı. TRIOS (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) intraoral tarayıcı kullanılarak, tüm bireylerden istirahat pozisyonunda ve hemen ardından maksimum ağız açıklığında olmak üzere ikişer kez intraoral tarama yapıldı. Elde edilen dijital görüntüler üzerinde belirlenen referans noktaları arası mesafe her bir bölge için ayrı ayrı ölçüldü. Her bir bölge için istirahat pozisyonundaki noktalar arası mesafe değerinden, maksimum ağız açıklığındaki mesafe değeri çıkartılarak MMF değerleri hesaplandı. Tam dişli bireylerde median mandibular fleksiyon değerleri kanin dişi bölgesinde ortalama 0,048 mm, 1. premolar diş bölgesinde 0,138 mm, 2. premolar diş bölgesinde 0,225 mm, 1. molar diş bölgesinde 0,324 mm ve 2. molar diş bölgesinde 0,473 mm olarak bulunmuştur. Tam dişsiz bireylerde ise R1-L1 bölgesinde 0,091 mm, R2-L2 bölgesinde 0,164 mm, R3-L3 bölgesinde 0,243 mm, R4-L4 bölgesinde 0,343 mm, R5-L5 bölgesinde 0,456 mm, R6-L6 bölgesinde 0,555 mm, R7-L7 bölgesinde 0,716 mm ve R8-L8 bölgesinde ise 0,917 mm olarak bulunmuştur. Çalışmanın sonuçları değerlendirildiğinde, hem tam dişli hem de tam dişsiz bireylerde median mandibular fleksiyon miktarlarında cinsiyetler ve yönler arasında istatistiksel olarak önemli bir fark bulunmamıştır (p>0,01). Bu çalışmada, ağzın maksimum açılması ile mandibulanın esnediği ve ark genişliğinde azalma olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Bununla birlikte anterior bölgeden posterior bölgeye doğru gidildikçe fleksiyon miktarında lineer bir artış olduğu gözlenmiştir. Median mandibular flexure (MMF), is defined as the change in the shape of the mandible, caused by the lateral pterygoid muscles that contract during the opening and protrusion movements of the mouth. In this study, it was aimed to measure and evaluate the values of median mandibular flexure occurring in the maximum opening of the mandible in full dentate and edentulous individuals. A total of 91 volunteer individuals, 56 dentate and 35 edentulous, participated in our study. Intraoral scanning was performed twice in all individuals at the rest position and immediately after the maximum mouth opening by using the TRIOS (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) intraoral scanner. The distance between the reference points determined on the obtained digital images was measured for each region separately. Median mandibular flexure values were calculated by subtracting the distance value at the maximum mouth opening from the distance between the points at the rest position for each region. MMF values were found to be 0.048 mm in the canine tooth region, 0.138 mm in the 1st premolar tooth region, 0.225 mm in the 2nd premolar tooth region, 0.324 mm in the 1st molar tooth region, and 0.473 mm in the 2nd molar tooth region in dentated individuals. In case of edentulous individuals, MMF values were found to be 0.091 mm in R1-L1 region, 0.164 mm in R2-L2 region, 0.243 mm in R3-L3 region, 0.343 mm in R4-L4 region, 0.456 mm in R5-L5 region, 0.555 mm in R6-L6 region, R7-L7 region 0.716 mm and 0.917 mm in the R8-L8 region. Evaluation of the study results shows that no statistically significant difference was found between the genders and directions in the median mandibular flexure values in both dentate and edentulous individuals (p>0.01). In this study, it was concluded that the mandible flexure and the arch width decreases with the maximum opening of the mouth.
