1839 Tanzimat Fermanı ile başlayan ve 1923 Cumhuriyet'in ilanı ile devam eden Geç Osmanlı Erken Cumhuriyet Modernleşmesinde, kadın hareketlerinin ve iktidar politikalarının sonucunda devlet tarafından kadın, yeni bir toplumsal özne olarak seçilmiş ve inşa edilmiştir. Devlet iradesiyle gerçekleşen bu durum, başkent İstanbul başta olmak üzere tüm Osmanlı coğrafyasında eğitimli kadının kamusal alanda görünürlüğünü sağlamış ve mümkün kılmıştır.
