Tobacco Products and Alcohol Usage Situations, and Approaches to Smoking of the Students of SüleymanDemirel UniversityPurpose: The aim of this study is to determine the tobacco products-alcohol usage situations and approachesto smoking of the students of Süleyman Demirel University in 2009-2010 academic year. Material and Method:The study was planned in descriptive type, students were chosen randomly and questionnaire form wasused in collecting the data. Results: 1309 students (682 female/627 male) in the range of 17-30 participatedin this study. At the end of this study, amongst the female students, it was detected that 66.1% had no badhabits, 28.2% smoked cigarettes, 17.2% smoked hookah, 1.6% smoked pipe-cigar and 14.5% drank alcohol,and amongst the male students: 30.9% had no bad habits, 60.4% smoked cigarettes, 37.5% smoked hookah,13.9% smoked pipe-cigar, 36.5% drank alcohol and 12 students used drugs. The six students having all badhabits were male. 22% of students smoking started wondering, 18,2% started with friends encouragement,4,0% started because of smoking parents. 92,3% of the students stated that they know the hazards of smoking.10,2% claimed that they would spend the last money they had on cigarette. Most of the students (66,5%)supported the smoking ban. Conclusion: The percentage of smoking and drinking alcohol of studentsattending SDÜ is at the average of Turkey. Most of the students know the hazards of smoking. Majority ofthe students have negative attitude against smoking. The attitude of students must be taken into considerationin developing successful strategies in struggling of smoking
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, 2009-2010 yılı içerisinde Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesinde okuyan öğrenciler arasında tütün mamulleri-alkol kullanma durumları ile öğrencilerin sigaraya yaklaşımlarının belirlenmesi olarak belirlenmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma tanımlayıcı tipte planlanmış, öğrenciler rasgele seçilmiş ve verilerin toplanmasında anket formu kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan 1309 öğrencinin %52,1'i kız, %47,9'u erkek, yaş 17-30 arasında ve ortalaması ise 20,64±1,58 olarak bulunmuştur. Çalışmanın sonunda kız öğrencilerin %66,1'inin hiçbir zararlı alışkanlığının olmadığı, %28,2'sinin sigara, %17,2'sinin nargile, %1,6'sının pipo-puro içtiği, alkol kullanan kız öğrenci oranının ise %14,5 olduğu saptanmıştır. Erkek öğrencilerin %30,9'unun hiçbir zararlı alışkanlığının olmadığı, %60,4'ünün sigara, %37,5'inin nargile, %13,9'unun Pipo-Puro içtiği, alkol alan erkek öğrenci oranının %36,5 olduğu, 12 (%1.9) erkek öğrencinin uyuşturucu kullandığı ve bütün zararlı alışkanlıkların hepsine birden sahip olan 6 (%1) kişinin tümünün erkek öğrenci olduğu saptandı. Sigara içen öğrencilerin %22'si sigaraya kendi merakları nedeniyle, %18,2'si arkadaş teşviki, %4,'ü sigara içen aile büyüklerinin etkisi ile başladıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Öğrencilerden %92, 3'ü sigaranın sağlığa olan zararlarını bildiklerini, %10,2'si en son kalan parasını sigaraya vereceğini belirtmiştir. Öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğunun (n=865, %66,5) sigara yasağını desteklediği saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi öğrencilerinde tütün mamulleri-alkol kullanma düzeyleri Türkiye ortalamasındadır. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğu sigaranın zararlarını bilmektedir. Çoğunluğu sigara yasağını desteklemektedir. Sigaraya karşı olumsuz tutum sergileyen öğrenciler çoğunluktadır. Sigara ile savaşta başarılı stratejiler geliştirilebilmek için öğrencilerin bu durumları göz önüne alınmalıdır. Material and Method: Study was planned descriptively. The students were randomly selected and questionnaire was administered to students for data collection. Results: The mean age of 1309 cases was 20, 64±1, 58 year and 52, 1% of them were female and 47, 9% were male. Consequently, there weren't bad habits of 66, 1%, smoked regularly of 28, 2%, smoked water-pipe of 17, 2%, smoked pipe-cigar 1, 6 %, alcohol abuse of 14, 5% in female students. There were no bad habits of just 30,9%, regularly smoked cigarette of 60,4%, smoked water pipe of 37,5%, smoked pipe-cigar of 13,9%, alcohol habits of 36,5%, drug habits of 1,9% in male students. The most popular reason for smoking was wondering (22%), the second one was imitation of friends (18, 2%) and the third one was imitation of their parents (4%) who smoke cigarette. Most of the students (92, 3%) were reported that “I know that the smoking hazards on my health”. Most of the students (66, 5%) were support the smoking-ban law. Conclusion: Smoking level of students at the Süleyman Demirel University is Turkey's average level. A majority of students aware of smoking hazards and the support smoking ban. A majority of the students had negative attitudes towards smoking. These situations of the students should be taken into consideration in order to successful strategies developing in struggle with smoking.Key words: Smoking; University Students; Bad Habits
