Aim: Enterococci which are part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, are being considered as important agents of nosocomial infections, mainly because of their increasing resistance rates to antimicrobial agents and their capability of acquiring and exchanging new resistance mechanisms. Identification of Enterococcus spp. at the species level is of great importance, for appropriate treatment of patients and infection control management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the compliances of BBL Crystal, VITEK, API Rapid ID 32 Strep and API 20 Strep identification systems in the identification of clinical enterococcus isolates.Materials and Methods: A total of 52 enterococci isolated from blood cultures of different patients were identified by API Rapid ID 32 Strep, API 20 Strep, VITEK and BBL Crystal identification systems according to manufacturers' instructions. Identified Enterococcus species, identification levels and compliances of the identification systems with each other were evaluated.Results: All (100%), 44 (84.6%),39 (75%) and 33 (63.5%) of 52 strains were identified to species level with an identification level of good, very good or excellent, respectively with BBL Crystal, VITEK, Rapid ID 32 Strep and API 20 Strep systems. While there were no unidentified strain with BBL Crystal, and API 20 Strep, one and two strains were unidentified with VITEK and Rapid ID 32 systems, respectively. The highest compliance rate (92.3%) was detected between BBL Crystal and VITEK systems and the compliance rates of API 20 Strep with other systems were detected to be lower.Conclusion: It has been determined that identification levels and compliances of BBL Crystal and VITEK systems were higher and identification results of API 20 Strep system displayed not only low identification levels but also the lowest compliance rates with other identification systems.Amaç: İnsan gastrointestinal ve genitoüriner sistem floralarının doğal elemanı olan enterokoklar, çeşitli antibiyotiklere artan direnç oranları göstermeleri ve yeni direnç mekanizmalarını kazanma ve aktarma yetenekleri nedeniyle nozokomiyal enfeksiyonların önemli sebepleri olarak değerlendirilmektedirler. Enterokokların tür düzeyinde tanımlanması hastaların uygun tedavisi ve enfeksiyon kontrolü açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada, klinik örneklerden izole edilen enterokokların tanımlanmasında, BBL Crystal, VITEK, API Rapid ID 32 Strep ve API 20 Strep tanımlama sistemlerinin uyumlarının değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: Her biri farklı hastaya ait kan kültürü örneklerinden izole edilmiş 52 enterokok izolatının API Rapid ID 32 Strep, API 20 Strep, VITEK ve BBL Crystal tanımlama sistemleri ile üretici firmaların önerileri doğrultusunda tanımlanmaları yapıldı. Belirlenen Enterococcus türleri, tanımlama düzeyleri ve kullanılan yöntemlerin Enterococcus türlerini tanımlamada birbirleriyle olan uyumları değerlendirildi.Bulgular: BBL Crystal ile 52 suşun tamamı (%100), VITEK ile 44'ü (%84.6), Rapid ID 32 Strep ile 39'u (%75), API 20 Strep ile 33'ü (%63.5) iyi, çok iyi ya da mükemmel düzeyde tanımlanmıştır. BBL Crystal ve API 20 Strep sistemi ile tanımlanamayan izolat bulunmazken VITEK ile bir, Rapid ID 32 sistemi ile iki izolat tür düzeyinde tanımlanamamıştır. Tanımlama sistemleri arasında en yüksek uyum oranı (%92.3) BBL Crystal ve VITEK sistemleri arasında elde edilmiş, API 20 Strep sistemi ile diğer sistemler arasındaki uyum oranlarının daha düşük olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Sonuç: BBL Crystal ve VITEK sistemleri ile tanımlama düzeylerinin ve bu sistemlerin birbiriyle uyumunun daha yüksek olduğu ve API 20 Strep sisteminin tanımlama sonuçlarının düşük tanımlama düzeyleri yanında diğer sistemlerle en düşük uyum oranları gösteren sonuçlar verdiği belirlenmiştir.
