<p>Hat sanatında 19. yüzyılın önemli hattatları arasında sayılan Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi, özellikle sülüs ve nesih yazıda fevkalâde kudretli bir hattat idi. Küçük yaşlarda dinî ilimlere ve hat sanatına olan merâkı sebebiyle Mehmed Hâşim, Halîl Zühdî ve Hüseyin Lütfî gibi hocalardan sülüs-nesih dersleri almıştır. Henüz on beş yaşlarında başladığı ve ömrünün çoğunu geçirdiği Bâb-ı Seraskerî'deki kâtip olarak memuriyeti nedeniyle hat sanatına ağırlık veremese de Osmanlı hat sanatında sülüs ve nesih yazılarıyla dönemin en meşhur hattatları arasında yer alan ve devrin en büyük sülüs-nesih üstâdlarından Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi ve Mehmed Şevkî Efendi'den sonra zikredilmektedir. Şeyh Hamdullâh'ın yazmaya başlayıp yarım bıraktığı Mushaf-ı Şerîfi 350 yıl sonra aynı üslubla tamamlaması ve yine Ramazan-ı Şerîf'te 26 gün gibi kısa sürede bir Mushaf-ı Şerîf yazması, Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi'nin kaleminin sür'atine ve nesih yazıda ne kadar mâhir olduğunu göstermektedir. Mustafa Rakım şîvesi taşıyan sülüs-nesih yazılarıyla pek çok eser ortaya koymuştur. Âhir ömrüne kadar birbirinden değerli talebeler yetiştirmiş, talebesi olmayanların ise icâzetnamelerinde musaddık olarak katılmıştır.<br></p><p>Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi was considered among the most important calligraphers of the 19th. century of his time in calligraphy, and he was a fantastically tremendous calligrapher, especially in thuluth and naskh writings. Because of his interest in Islamic sciences and calligraphy at an early age, he took thuluth-naskh lessons from teachers such as Mehmed Hashim, Khalîl Zuhdi and Huseyin Lütfî. Although he can not give weight to calligraphy due to his official position as a secretary scribe in Bâb-ı Seraskerî (Office of Chief of General Staff), where he started at the age of fifteen and spent most of his life, he is mentioned in Ottoman calligraphy literature after Kazasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi and Mehmed Shevki Efendi, who were among the most famous calligraphers of the period with their thuluth and naskh writings His completion of the Mushaf-ı Sharif 350 years later in the same style that Sheikh Hamdullâh had started its writing and left incomplete, and again his own writing of a Mushaf-ı Sharif in 26 days during the month of Ramadan shows how talented Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi is especially in fast writing and naskh. He has produced many works with thuluth-naskh writings bearing the style of Mustafa Rakım. He trained talented students until the end of his life, and participated as certifiers in the diplomas of those who became students of other caligraphers.<br></p>
